Living with a Mac…down the road

It’s been several months now since I became a Mac owner so here is an update to this point.

First a preface in that this is not a benchmark or professional review just my feelings about the Mac environment.

At first there was the giddiness of the purchase, much like any tech purchase for me. Then the learning where the buttons were to do the same things I had been doing on Windows. Then the file and folder transfers from the old Windows laptop to the new MacBook. All of which were fairly painless. Then the living with the MacBook’s look and feel, which is the biggest surprise so far…loving it. And of course the “how is this better the Windows”? questions. The main thing about the Mac is being able to travel and plug into different networks without the dread of being hit with a virus or some such thing. Even with a Mac one has to be careful. But there isn’t that in the back of your mind gnawing feeling that you are about to call down all manner of nasty things to your computer just because you are using the hotels network. Not having to be a security guru is the silver bullet for me. The one thing that makes me glad I spent the premium for a Mac and the biggest thing I’m glad to be shed of switching from Windows. It leaves you free to surf the web and do all the other online things without the worry. And that my friends is a beautiful thing.

There is still much to learn and a few disappointments to be worked around. But the experience so far has been a pleasant one.

Icing on the cake is having the iPod and iPhone integrate so well as to seem like completely different devices. They really were made for each other.

More about the transition will come in later postings. For now…I must be off.

  1. See you have the ability to break free from the Windows world being in a non office environment. Since Microsoft has the office market (and will for some time) I am stuck. We have several MACs in the office and I find them quite annoying to connect with my servers (windows), printers, etc. Messing with them it just seems that everything takes an extra step to complete or an extra click just to be different from Windows.

One benefit as stated in your article is that the virus threat is not as prominent and thats a big plus. As an experiment this week I am trying to run Linux at work. So far so good. The only thing is the Microsoft Exchange connection that seems to be the most problem. We’ll see if I can make it all week without windows.
