Thresholds…

The word threshold could be used to describe many different events or even a place. Place being the area at the foot of a door that strapping young men and a few not so strapping carry their bride over. 30 years ago tomorrow marks the day when it was my turn to perform the threshold carry.

In the 30 years since, many threshold events have occurred. The birth of children, moving to different states, military service, children getting married and most recent-the birth of grandchildren.

It has been mentioned on these pages many times that time moves so fast on occasion that one feels like a time traveler. So here we are celebrating a threshold event 30 years in the making and yet seeming as if it happened only yesterday. Cliche’ for sure but, as one gets older it seems that time speeds up.

As you get older and time becomes something you can never have enough of, it slips through your fingers at an ever increasing pace. When you reflect on this phenomenon you get a sense that every minute is precious and should not be wasted. Although, in practice, it is much harder to make every minute count. That shouldn’t deter us from trying.

I will try to heed my own advice and fill those fleeting moments with something. Even a mundane activity such as washing clothes could be used as a time to contemplate the bigger things. Maybe take a deep breathe and soak up all that has occurred to that point. It could help bring our lives into better focus and allow us to appreciate a little more those thresholds that have already taken place.

As always…I must be off.
