The wind in the trees, and other stuff…

Our neighbor has a very tall pine tree positioned between his house and ours. One of my favorite sounds is that of wind blowing through a pine tree. Words can not accurately describe the sound, to me it’s as if the wind itself is talking, using the pine needles as vocal chords. At any rate the sound has an almost Zen quality to it.

Whenever Ashtyn comes over she likes to play the piano. She has been tickling the keys for some time now. Even from the start, she rarely just bangs on the keyboard, instead she prefers to play using both hands and all her fingers trying to strike as many keys as possible. Some of her playing actually, and more often than not, sounds very good. Hardly an out of place note can be heard. It is quite amazing that at 5 years old she addresses the piano with proper posture and places her hands on the keyboard as if she has had formal training. Her playing seems to have an almost classical quality to it, with an occasional tangent into fusion jazz. If she were to actually take lessons though, it may sour her on the whole idea, having to learn chord structure and the difference between flats and sharps. At this point in her music career it may be more prudent to let her explore the boundaries of playing than to actually show her where they are.

Weather report…Nice!

As always…I must be off.

  1. i love that sound too. Here in California, I hear the sound at PInnacles National Monument, specifically, the wind blowing thru the Gray pine trees. As you probably know, aspen and cottenwood trees, with their “quaking leaves” caused by flattened petioles, are some of the noisiest,,,and nicest soundingleaves!
